Here's a clip from our interview with Matthew Behrens - writer and social justice advocate - who has worked closely with the subjects of security certificates for many years. He shares some insight into the more dangerous aspects of the security certificate process. As Matthew discusses, in this labyrinthine system, even winning a security certificate case doesn’t mean you get to walk free. Learn more: www.secrettrial5.com
We sat down with Audrey Macklin, Professor & Chair in Human Rights Law at the University of Toronto Law School, to discuss some of the fundamental problems with the allegations against security certificate subjects. Speaking about Hassan Almrei, one of the Secret Trial 5, Macklin points out the crucial differences between speculation and verifiable proof of wrongdoing. Even though the allegations against the Secret Trial 5 are very serious, with a little scratching beneath the surface, they may not hold up to much. Learn more: www.secrettrial5.com
In his appearance before the Supreme Court of Canada in Charkaoui v. Canada in 2006, Lorne Waldman, one of Canada’s leading immigration and refugee lawyers, spells out how fruitless the role of a lawyer can be in security certificate cases. So long as there are secret hearings and secret evidence, even the most passionate and committed counsel can only do so much for their clients. Think these kinds of limitations in our legal system are unjust? So did the Supreme Court.

Amar Wala pitches the Secret Trial 5 to the Cuban Hat Project (http://www.cubanhat.tv/).
The Secret Trial 5 is a crowdfunded documentary in-progress that examines the human impact of Canada’s “war on terror”; specifically the use of security certificates, a tool that allows for indefinite detention, with no charges, and secret evidence. Over the last decade, 5 men have been held under security certificates in Canada. They spent between 2 and 7 years in prison each. None of them have been charged with a crime.
