Dear Friends,
We hoped to write you today with some very exciting news, but given the events unfolding in Ottawa this week, our celebratory tone has been replaced by a feeling of sadness, as well as a sense of responsibility.
We feel we are about to have a very important conversation as a country, and that The Secret Trial 5 has an important role within that dialogue. Now more than ever, we need to ensure that the human narrative is not lost in this discussion.
Given that, we are proud to announce that The Secret Trial 5 will have its theatrical premiere in Toronto at the Bloor-Hot Docs Cinema on November 7th, 2014. The film will screen 5 times over the following week, before moving on to Ottawa for a 3 night run at the Bytowne Cinema beginning on November 16th.
This small theatrical run is essential, as the success of these screenings will determine whether other theatres across Canada program the film. As always, we turn to you to help spread the word. Please encourage your friends and loved ones in Toronto and Ottawa to go see the film!
Advance tickets for the Ottawa screenings are available the day of each screening.
Details here.
On Sunday Nov 16, there will be a filmmaker Q + A, along with special guests Sophie Harkat, wife of security certificate detainee Mo Harkat, and Lawyer Norm Boxal after the screening.
We are ever grateful for your support, and with your help, we hope The Secret Trial 5 can play in other cities across Canada and be a part of our upcoming national dialogue.
Thank you very much,
The ST5 Team.

Dear ST5 Friends,
We've got some GREAT NEWS to share...
Firstly, some wonderful news from Montreal: Adil Charkaoui has received his Canadian citizenship. This is a significant moment, as it is further vindication for Adil, who spent 6 years living under a security certificate without charge. Join us in extending hearty congratulations to the entire Charkaoui family!
From the Justice for Adil Charkaoui Committee, the people who faithfully supported Adil, "...this is a victory for the thousands of people of very diverse backgrounds and different beliefs, who joined forces to march, write letters, speak out, contribute funds, host and organize events, sit through the endless court hearings, offer moral support to Charkaoui and his family...Most of all, it was a victory for the courage and strength of Adil and his family, who refused to be destroyed but retained their full dignity and integrity throughout the years of struggle." But that’s not the only piece of good news we had this week. We are delighted to announce that we are partnering with Blue Ice Docs to distribute The Secret Trial 5 in Canada! Blue Ice Docs is a new company, headed by Robin Smith of Kinosmith Inc., who we admire greatly. We are honoured to be part of their incredible FIRST line up, and to be their FIRST Canadian documentary.
Stay tuned for updates on when and where the film will screen. If you want to see it in your city or town, let us know! Write us at: info@secrettrial5.com.
With their help, we will be able to reach more people than ever before. They have embraced our community-based approach to distribution and believe strongly that this is a film every Canadian needs to see. We couldn’t ask for a better partner.
Stay tuned for updates on when and where the film will screen. If you want to see it in your city or town, let us know! Write us at: info@secrettrial5.com.
Last weekend, ST5 was named the BEST DOCUMENTARY at the Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival in Mississauga. This is a tremendous honour, as we were in some incredible company in the doc category.
We hope to have more good news for you shortly, as we expect to play at more festivals, and find more partners to help get the film out there. The Supreme Court may have found security certificates constitutional, but we firmly believe that the more Canadians know about this issue, the less likely they are to be used in the future.
Stay tuned for more festival and theatrical dates in a city near you!
Thank you,
The ST5 Team

We have worked on this project for 5 years. Many of you have been with us since those early days, some of you are new. To celebrate our theatrical release, we are very excited to unveil the official poster for The Secret Trial 5!
Many thanks to the talented Julian Brown, who did the animations for the film, for his design handiwork. For some of you crowdfunders out there, this poster is coming to you!

Dear ST5 Friends,
As many of you know, the Supreme Court recently made a decision on the use of security certificates in Canada. Unfortunately, the process was found constitutional. It left many of us puzzled and angry, most of all Sophie and Mohamed Harkat who now face several more years of potential legal limbo.
“I will fight,” said Sophie Harkat at a press conference on Parliament Hill the day after the ruling. If the Harkats have the strength to go on, then so do we. Our goal now is to use the film to provide the much needed human context to this decision. We will use the film to spread awareness and engage Canadians. We want the reaction we saw at Hot Docs - one of anger, frustration, and empathy - to spread across this country. We can do it with your help!
We have been busy applying to festivals across the country and internationally. Wish us luck! IN FACT, TWEET the following festivals and encourage them to screen @secrettrial5! Tell them why this is an important film!
@VIFFest, @thefilmfest, @CinefestSudbury, @calgaryfilm, @RIDM
Spread the word! Share! Tell your friends!
On a more positive note, ST5 was recently screened at “Docs for Change.” Amar was the first guest filmmaker for this incredible program, created by the DOC Institute and MCIS Language Services, which utilizes doc filmmaking techniques to inspire civic engagement and combat isolation in newcomer communities across the GTA. It was an incredibly rewarding experience that we hope to be part of again.
Stay tuned for more news to come!
Thanks,
The ST5 team.
Amar Wala
The long awaited decision in Mohamed Harkat's Supreme Court Challenge is being delivered this Wednesday at 9:45 am!
The last time the court deliberated on security certificates, they unanimously found them to be unconstitutional. Let's hope Justice can prevail once and for all. We'll be there filming, follow us on twitter and facebook for updates!
