Outreach Corner - Special Report

Posted by Catherine Lathwell on Monday, October 24, 2011.

I'm writing a quick post so that you get a taste of our excitement and to let you know that there is a flurry of activity behind the scenes here at The Secret Trial 5 Productions.

At this very moment, Noah is at the CUPW convention showing off our award winning demo and talking to folks about what we're all about.

AND I spent the morning drafting an agreement with Inter Pares that is so exciting I can barely wait to break the news next month when it is finalized.

MEANWHILE we will be back in Montreal mid November for a screening with the amazing Cinema Politica.

STAY TUNED!

Outreach Corner (October Report)

Posted by Catherine Lathwell on Thursday, October 13, 2011.

The primary objective of this Secret Trial 5 campaign, of course, is to make the documentary.

Our secondary goal is to ensure as many people as possible understand that Security Certificates are real Canadian Policy;  that right here in Canada, actual people are detained indefinitely, with no charges based on secret evidence.

The outreach strategy to achieve this secondary goal has three prongs: to engage in dialogue via social networks; to solicit feedback and contributions from our audience; and to connect with organizations who are working to promote awareness about Canadian Security Certificate Legislation.

My new "Outreach Corner" blog posts will keep you updated on our work connecting with organisations across Canada and throughout the world.

Meeting Mahjoub

Posted by Amar Wala on Friday, October 07, 2011.

In early 2009, two years after I finished my short film The Good Son, I heard something that stung me in quite the same way as the sting that inspired that film. I heard that Mohammad Zeki Mahjoub, a father of 2 who spent nearly a decade behind bars as a terror suspect, without charge or open evidence, had ASKED to be returned to prison.

Mr. Mahjoub had been released from jail and placed under house arrest in February 2007. He and his family were to live under “strict conditions”, which included cameras in their home, search and seizure without a warrant, and being followed by CBSA agents on family outings. At the time it was perceived by many, including myself, that these house-arrest conditions while severe, were a vast improvement from prison. We were wrong.

Solidarity Is Our Security - Inter Pares Bulletin Article

Posted by Noah Bingham on Friday, October 07, 2011.

What if we were fighting a War on Fear rather than a War on Terror? Our own fears, and those of others. Would that not get at the very heart of everyone's deep and innate concern for security?

"What would happen if we traded fear for trust? Fear individualizes and breaks down community, while trust rebuilds the connections among us. By convening people from around the world to discuss and act together on issues of common concern..."

This is an excerpt from a great article on Inter Pares' bulletin in Sept 2009. Check it out HERE. And find our more about Inter Pares at www.interpares.ca

New ST5 Clip - Mo & Sophie Harkat - House Arrest Conditions

Posted by Noah Bingham on Wednesday, October 05, 2011.

This is a clip we have shown at our events, that we recently uploaded. It gives a brief portrait of how painful and difficult the house arrest conditions are for security certificate detainees. Keep in mind Mo and other detainees have not been charged with a crime nor have access to the evidence held against them. Please donate, share, like our Facebook page and tell others about this project.
